Phis Overseas

This semester I had the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain, and it has been surreal! Leaving for the trip nearly five months ago, I was so nervous about what the future would hold. I had little experience outside of the US, and my Spanish is okay at best, so I knew it was going to be an adventure to say the least. Today, I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The culture of Spain is incredibly unique, and I’ve fallen in love with their food, especially tapas. The environment of Spain can be very different from the US at times, and it took a little adapting. For example, the majority of shops close from 2-4PM for siesta, allowing everyone to take a break during the day. I’ve learned to greatly appreciate this time of the day, and I usually spend it reading, journaling, or resting. It is also normal to eat dinner around 10PM, which I’m still not totally used to.

Along with spending time in Madrid, I’ve visited Berlin, London, Vienna, Budapest, Montecarlo, Paris, Rome, and so many other cities across Europe. Paris is by far my favorite city; the Eiffel Tower is breathtaking. The pizza and pasta is definitely better in Italy, and Buckingham Palace left me speechless. I never imagined traveling to this capacity at such a young age, and I will be forever thankful for my study abroad memories!

With love and AOE,

Alex Doming
